Kalratri Devi is the seventh of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, known as Navadurga. She is first described in the earliest known literature on Goddess Durga in Markandeya Purana, 81–93 of Durga Saptashati. Kalratri is considered to be one of the many destructive forms of Mother Goddess, including Kali, Mahakali, Bhadrakali, Bhairavi, Death, Rudrani, Chamunda, Chandi and Durga.
History of Kalratri maa
It is not uncommon to discover names, in which Kali and Kalratri are interrelated, although the two gods are argued to have somewhat different existence. Kalratri Devi is mentioned in Hinduism as a typical goddess nearby 3000 BC. Chronologically, Kalratri Maa is preceding but most likely, informs, the current representation of Kali.
Maa Kalratri is traditionally worshiped during the nine nights of Navratri celebrations. The seventh day of Navratri Puja (Hindu prayer ritual) is specially dedicated to her and considered to be the fiery form of the Goddess, her presence arouses fear. This form of the goddess is believed to destroy all demons, ghosts, evil spirits, and negative energies who flee in search of her arrival.
Saudipagama, an ancient Tantric treatise referred to in Silpa Prakashan, describes the goddess Kalratri as the goddess who rules over part of the day and night. He is associated with the Mukutra Chakra (also known as Sahasrara Chakra) from which the invader gains siddhi and wealth (specifically, knowledge, power and wealth).
Maa Kalratri Devi is also known as Shubhankari (शुभंकरी) Meaning to do well in Sanskrit, due to the belief that she always provides hopeful results to her devotees. Since it is believed that she makes her devotees fearless. Other little known names of Goddess Kalratri Maa include Raudri and Dhumrana.
Kalratri Maa Festival
On the 7th day, Hindu devotees worship the Maa Kalratri avatar of Durga. Every time the forces of evil revive the earth to the destruction of the demon, Kalratri incarnated as a divine power to protect his devotees from evil. It is one of the most revered incarnations of the Goddess.
