History of Maa Mahagauri
The name Mahagauri means very white because it was white in color and very beautiful. (Maha, महा = महान; Gauri, गौरी = श्वेत). Mahagauri is usually depicted with four hands, one with a trident, lotus and one drum, while the fourth is a blessing sign. The lotus flower is sometimes replaced by a garland. She rides a white bull, which is usually shown wearing white clothes.
The story of the birth of Mahagauri Mata is as follows, the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha could only be killed by a female child of Parvati. Therefore, as advised by Brahma, Shiva used his magic to blacken Parvati’s skin, giving Parvati the meaning of “Kaali”, meaning “black”. However, “Kaali” word can also mean “death”, so Parvati was teased. Parvati was agitated by this jealousy, so she performed intense austerities with Brahma to regain her proper complexion. She was successful in her penance and Brahma advised her to bathe in the Mansarovar River in the Himalayas. As she took a bath, her dark skin broke away from her and took the form of a woman. Parvati was called Kaushiki because of her skin.
As a result of removing her black skin, Parvati regained her proper complexion and hence earned the title of “Mahagauri”. Nevertheless, for the task of killing the demons, he gave Kaushiki his proper complexion and he (Parvati) regained Kali’s form. Kali changed into Chandi (Chandraghanta). Chandi killed the demon Dhumalochan. Chanda and Munda Devi were killed by Chamunda who appeared with Chandi’s third eye. Chandi then goes to Kalratri to kill Raktabija and Kaushiki kills Shumbha and Nishumbha, after which she merges with Kali and returns to Gauri. So, Devi Kaushiki also merged with Parvati, so she was conferred with the title Mahasaraswati or Ambika in Skanda Purana and Devi Mahatmya.
